The Experience

I remember when I was younger, feeling as though I had nobody to talk to in my times of need. Growing up, I never wanted anyone else to feel the way I did... alone and having nowhere to turn. Volunteering for Crisis Text Line was an outlet to ensure nobody seeking help had to do it alone and that finding the right resources was not a weakness, but a strength. I volunteer a few hours a week and have conversations with individuals who come seeking help in many forms. I talk with them over an online platform of messaging until they are ready to leave, or until i can direct them to sources elsewhere to best aid the situation. While sometimes topics are heavy, the experience of being there for someone when they need me is worth every hour I spend volunteering.

My Learning

I learned about patience and vulnerability. Having vulnerability is an important humane trait, as it is difficult for others to share their feelings, but being able to is a great strength. I was humbled by how willing people are to reach out for help, being vulnerable to a stranger online and trying to better their situation. It taught me that people can be genuinely good and wish to give back. It also prompted the idea that nobody knows what someone else is going through. The experience keeps me grounded to having an open mind as anyone could be going through struggles and not let anyone know. It is important to be kind to others as everyone is going through their own struggles. It made me become more selfless and watch over people more, promoted me to become a better listener, and expand my own horizons of being vulnerable to others.

A Lasting Impact

Volunteering for Crisis Text Line has taught me more than I could have imagined. It is the reason I continue to volunteer and spend my time helping others. Not only is it a good resource to rely on, it proves to me that I too should not fear reaching out to others in a time of need. I often now find myself checking in on my friends and family to ensure that mental health is being taken care of. I've learned to cope with heavier subjects, and how to navigate the situations. It is helpful for my future in a career of Genetic Counseling where I will be aiding families on the best course of action with their desires and needs.
